T. Christensen Picks: The Best Sports Romance Books to Add to Your TBR

Sports romance is one of my favorite genres, which is no surprise, since five of my six books fall into this category. Narrowing down this list was much harder than I expected, but I pulled together the sports romance books that deliver everything I love: angst, chemistry, and characters you can’t stop thinking about.

If you’re craving sports romance, angsty athlete love stories, or slow‑burn enemies‑to‑lovers tension, you’re in the right place. You can download the full list for free on my website, but today I’m highlighting three standout picks that deserve a spot on every romance reader’s shelf.

Title: Deviant King

Author: Rina Kent

Dark, Addictive, Football (Soccer) Romance

The book cover for Deviant King by Rina Kent features dark, richly colored flowers in deep red, purple, and orange tones. A king and queen chess piece sit among the blooms, adding a sense of strategy and power. The title appears in bold white text with the tagline “The villain isn’t supposed to be king,” and the cover notes it is Royal Elite Book 1 by a New York Times bestselling author.

Deviant King was my very first Rina Kent novel, and the moment I finished it, I immediately devoured the entire Royal Elite Series. Every book features a hero from the Royal Elite School (RES) football team (soccer for my fellow U.S. readers), and each story delivers that signature Rina Kent blend of darkness, obsession, and emotional unraveling.

I’ve said before that I rarely finish trilogies. In my opinion, most of the time, the story could be wrapped up in two books. But this series? Absolutely the exception. I discovered Deviant King at the perfect moment, with all three books already released, and I tore through them in just a few days.

Why This Book Hooks You From Page One

The tension between Aiden and Elsais immediate, unsettling, and impossible to look away from. The book’s opening scene is Aiden suddenly, and inexplicably, focused on Elsa. They had a run‑in on her first day at RES, and she’s spent years avoiding him, determined not to draw his attention again. But Aiden’s fixation isn’t imagined. It’s real, intense, and not at all what Elsa—or the reader—expects.

Slight spoiler alert: One of the most memorable elements of their dynamic is Aiden’s habit of encircling Elsa’s throat with his hand. It appears threatening, controlling, even cruel. But Rina Kent flips that assumption on its head, revealing a deeper psychological connection that becomes central to their relationship. It’s dark romance at its finest.

Elsa: The Good Girl With Secrets

Elsa’s character adds a compelling emotional core to the story. She suffers from childhood amnesia and lives with her aunt and uncle, doing everything she can to be the perfect daughter. She’s a straight‑A student, a rule follower, and determined to get into the university her guardians once attended.

But thanks to her unforgettable first encounter with Aiden, she’s kept to herself at school. Her best friend Kim—who prefers the shadows just as much—becomes her anchor. (And yes, Kim has her own story.)

Rina Kent’s Signature Storytelling

I won’t spoil the twists, but Rina Kent’s plotting is brilliant. She weaves psychological tension, emotional trauma, and slow‑burn obsession into a story that feels both dangerous and deeply intimate. The way she gradually connects Aiden and Elsa’s pasts is masterful. I often wish I could peek inside her mind just to see how she constructs these intricate, addictive narratives.

If you love:

  • dark romance
  • obsessive heroes
  • football/soccer romance
  • high‑school elite drama
  • slow‑burn psychological tension

Deviant King is a must‑read.

Title: Paper Princess

Author: Erin Watt

Billionaire Guardian, High‑Drama Family, and a Fierce Heroine

If you love YA romance with grit, billionaire guardians, high‑school drama, and enemy‑to‑lovers tension, Paper Princess by Erin Watt is a must‑read. Ella Harper is exactly the kind of heroine I adore—resilient, sharp‑tongued, and determined to survive no matter what life throws at her. At just seventeen, she’s already endured more than most adults, yet she still manages to hold her ground and protect her heart.

The book cover for Paper Princess by Erin Watt features a gold, watercolor‑style crown against a soft cream and gold background. The tagline “These Royals Will Ruin You” appears at the top, with a circular badge noting “Exclusive Bonus Material.” The author’s name and title are displayed in bold, elegant lettering.

A Life‑Changing Twist From Page One

The story opens with Ella being summoned to the principal’s office. She assumes it’s about her chronic tardiness, but instead she comes face‑to‑face with Callum Royal, the man who claims to be her new guardian. Ella has never met him, and has been hiding the fact that her mother passed away—terrified of being placed in foster care. Now that her secret has been exposed she runs.

Callum Royal, a billionaire with more power than Ella knows what to do with, insists he knew her father and intends to take responsibility for her. After her failed attempt to run away, Ella is forced to leave behind the life she built and step into a world she never imagined.

Welcome to the Royal Empire

The moment Ella steps onto Callum’s private jet, designed by his company, she realizes she’s entering a world of unimaginable wealth. But luxury doesn’t mean comfort. When she arrives at the Royal mansion, she’s greeted by four of Callum’s sons staring down at her from the staircase… and it’s far from a warm welcome.

Erin Watt (a powerhouse duo of two authors) captures the dynamic perfectly:

“The Royal boys are not what I expected. They don’t look like rich pricks in preppy clothes. They look like terrifying thugs who can snap me like a twig.”

There are five Royal brothers, but it’s Reed Royal, the second oldest, who becomes Ella’s biggest obstacle—and her enemy in this enemy‑to‑lovers romance. Reed is the ringleader, the one who sets the tone for how the brothers treat Ella, and he makes it clear she’s not wanted. But Ella has survived far worse than entitled rich boys, and she refuses to back down.

Why Readers (Including myself) Devour This Book

Paper Princess delivers:

  • High‑school elite drama
  • Billionaire family secrets
  • A fierce, relatable heroine
  • A brooding, complicated love interest
  • Fast‑paced twists and nonstop tension

It’s the kind of book you inhale in one sitting because you have to know what happens next.

Title: Humiliating Revenge

Author: T. Christensen

A Soulful, Angsty Sports Romance About Strength, Survival, and Second Chances

The book cover for Humiliating Revenge by T. Christensen shows a young man in a partially unzipped hoodie, revealing a muscular torso as he looks off to the side. Dramatic, low lighting creates a moody, intense atmosphere, with bold typography labeling it as a contemporary young adult romance.

Humiliating Revenge is the second book I wrote and published, and it’s the first story that made me cry while writing it. Choosing a favorite among my books is nearly impossible, but this one holds a special place in my heart. I still feel connected to Olivia and Calum.

Trigger Warning

This story contains scenes of abuse (not between the hero and heroine). These moments are handled with care, but they are emotionally heavy.

Olivia: A Heroine Fighting for Her Future

Olivia Crawford is the kind of heroine (I hope) readers root for instantly. On the outside, she appears to have everything: wealth, status, and the “perfect” life her father has crafted for her. But behind closed doors, every possession she owns and every step she takes is tightly controlled. Her father’s grip on her life is suffocating, and Olivia pours everything she has into finishing college so she can earn a degree and finally build a future that belongs to her.

Calum: The Boy She Loved, The Man Who Returns a Legend

Calum grew up on the other side of town, far from Olivia’s privileged world. He was the first, and last, person to truly see her. Their connection was real, raw, and dangerous in a household where Olivia wasn’t allowed to choose anything for herself.

When their relationship was destroyed, Calum left town broken. But he rebuilt himself piece by piece, rising to fame as an MMA hero. Now he’s back, stronger and hardened.

At first, Calum is bitter. He wants Olivia to see what she lost. He wants her to feel the sting of his success. But as the story unfolds, his understanding of their past, and of Olivia’s reality, begins to shift.

A Story of Pain, Power, and Emotional Reckoning

Humiliating Revenge is a deeply emotional sports romance filled with:

  • slow‑burn tension
  • high‑stakes personal growth
  • a heroine fighting for freedom
  • a hero confronting the truth
  • small‑town pressure and family control
  • a second‑chance connection that refuses to die

This book embodies my tagline: A Soulful Angsty Romance. It’s raw, heartfelt, and built on the kind of emotional intensity that stays with you long after you finish reading.

Bringing it All Together

You can find the full list of my favorite sports romance books on my website, along with other romance book lists designed to help you discover your next emotional, addictive read. Whether you love sports romance, angsty athlete love stories, or slow‑burn enemies‑to‑lovers tension, there’s something there to spark your next obsession.

I grew up playing almost every sport imaginable, and I think that’s part of why sports romance speaks to me so deeply. I’m drawn to the stereotypical “jock” energy: focused, determined, competitive, and yes… a little arrogant. There’s something irresistible about characters who push themselves to the limit on the field and then find themselves completely undone by love. The built bodies don’t hurt either.

If you crave emotional, character‑driven romance, slow‑burn tension, enemies‑to‑lovers chemistry, and heroines who rise through the fire, I think you’ll fall in love with my books too.
