Impactful Romance Authors Who Shaped My Writing
These are the romance authors who shaped me. The writers whose emotional, character‑driven stories still stay with me years later. Their books made me forget I was even reading. I was absorbed, transported, completely lost in their worlds. They’re the reason I fell in love with romance novels, and the reason I write them. My hope is that readers find the same escape in my emotional, slow‑burn, angsty romances that these authors once gave me.
Years ago, I had Friday afternoons off. Those four hours were sacred. I’d race to the store, grab a Harlequin Presents romance, and devour it before picking up my kids from daycare. So many of those stories were deliciously tense enemies‑to‑lovers romances, and I’m convinced that’s why I’m still drawn to that subgenre today. Those books didn’t just entertain me—they shaped my voice as a romance author and continue to influence the stories I create now.
Author: Maya Banks
The Mistress: A Billionaire Surprise Pregnancy Romance

I’ve read many of Maya Banks’ books (her Harlequin Presents titles and so many others) but the one I return to again and again is The Mistress. Innocent Marley is completely out of her depth when she becomes the mistress of Greek tycoon Chrysander. He’s drawn to her almost against his will, unable to stay away…until he believes she’s betrayed him. And what happens after that is something I’ve never seen another romance novel pull off in quite the same way.
The emotion and heartbreak woven into this story are unforgettable. I’ve never read another billionaire romance that keeps pulling me back to reread the pages the way this one does. It’s the kind of book that imprints on you.
I’ve devoured many of Maya Banks’ novels, but two more that deserve an honorable mention are The Breathless Trilogy and the KGI Series. Both series are packed with the emotional intensity and addictive storytelling she’s known for.
Author: Abbi Glines
Blair is a tough, gun‑carrying southern girl who’s had to learn, by necessity, how to survive on her own. After her mother dies, she goes searching for the only family she has left, her father. With nowhere else to turn, she prays he’ll be there for her the way he once was. Instead, she’s thrown into a world she’s never known—a world of wealth, privilege, and people who have no idea what real struggle looks like. Even with every setback, Blair stays true to who she is.

And then there’s Rush. She knows she shouldn’t be drawn to him, but she can’t help it. While staying in his house and waiting for her dad to return, the tension between them builds in every scene. The chemistry between Rush and Blair leaps off the page. I love the slow burn, and the cliffhanger at the end is completely unexpected. This is one of the rare romance series where I devoured all three books and felt genuinely sad when it was over.
I’ve read many of Abbi Glines’ books, but another favorite is The Smoke Series. What I love is how different the two worlds are—Fallen Too Far is full of rich, polished, slightly uppity characters who’ve never had to work for anything, while The Smoke Series dives into a gritty, dangerous mafia romance world where you definitely don’t want to cross the wrong man. The vibes couldn’t be more opposite, yet both series give me the same addictive, emotional “feels” that Abbi Glines is so good at delivering.
Author: Rina Kent
Deviant King (Royal Elite Series 1-3)

When my bully romance phase was in full swing, I decided to try a new‑to‑me author: Rina Kent. The book was Deviant King, and from the first chapter, I was hooked. Aiden is cold, calculating, and completely unfeeling. His obsession with straight-laced Elsa is intense and inexplicable, and the moments he shares with her are the only glimpses of emotion we ever see from him. Rina does an incredible job portraying Aiden’s fractured psychology and what it feels like to be the sole focus of someone so dangerous, powerful, and unhinged.
What I love most about Rina Kent’s writing is the hidden depth she gives every character. No one is just “good” or “bad”—they’re layered, damaged, and endlessly compelling. This three‑book series about Aiden and Elsa was one I read non-stop until all three books were done. It’s dark, addictive, and exactly what I crave in a psychological, obsessive, enemies‑to‑lovers romance.

When I look back at the authors who shaped me, everything comes full circle. I’ve always been drawn to heroines who are vulnerable yet resilient. They may be unsure of themselves, still searching, still growing, but they refuse to break. The books I’ve shared above are filled with heroines like that, and those same qualities live at the heart of the stories I write.
You’ll see that reflected in my own novels, from the raw, aching vulnerability in Humiliating Revenge to the cautious, determined heroine in Breaking Tessa. My heroines fight, evolve, and hold on to who they are, even when the world tries to crush them.
If you love emotional, character‑driven, slow‑burn, enemies‑to‑lovers romance with heroines who rise through the fire, I think you’ll fall in love with my books too. Visit my website to explore them.
